We (Group 2 of LEED 4301 IIUM) are delighted to introduce our community engagement project focused on organizing a book corner for Al-Ikhlas School called the Al-Ikhlas School Book Management System Project. Al-Ikhlas School is a preschool and primary-level UNHCR-registered learning center located in the Taman Sri Murni, Batu Caves area of Kuala Lumpur. Founded in August 2015 by Ustaz Arfat Ganumia, the school initially focused on Islamic education but soon expanded its operations to offer academic and Madrasah sessions. With over 150 children attending each session, Al-Ikhlas School has become a vital educational institution for Rohingya and Myanmar children living in the surrounding flats.

Through our community engagement project, we aim to establish a book corner within Al-Ikhlas School to promote literacy and provide access to diverse reading materials. We believe that books have the power to inspire, educate, and empower individuals, and we are eager to create a welcoming space where children can explore new worlds through reading. By organizing the book corner, we hope to contribute to the holistic development of these children, fostering a love for reading and supporting their educational journey.

Al-Ikhlas Refugee School owns a reading corner that is specifically to be utilized by children from the ages of 6 to 12 years old. However, the institution is facing an issue of perpetual disarray of the school book rack which significantly impacted the learning process and environment for both children and educators.

Due to the fact that most users of the reading corner are students of below 12 years old, it is challenging for educators to encourage them with the habits of organizing books and maintaining a neat reading environment. Children may find organizing difficult due to overwhelming numbers of books or they don’t even have the requisite organizational abilities or knowledge. They might be less inclined to organize books if it seems like a chore or a requirement for them. Consequently, the reading area ended up getting cluttered with a mountain of books that were obstructing the way and causing unpleasant views and poor hygienic conditions in the school.

Therefore, we planned to:

  • Introduce a simple and visually appealing categorization system for books based on subjects, genres, or reading levels.
  • Create colorful labels and signs for each category to make it easier for children to identify where each book belongs.
  • Establish a regular cleaning schedule for the reading corner, involving students in maintaining cleanliness.
  • Provide cleaning supplies and storage solutions to make the process more accessible for both educators and students.
  • Assess and repair the existing book racks, ensuring they are safe, sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing.

We believe that this project can reducing clutter and implementing an organized system that contribute to a cleaner and more hygienic reading environment. In addition to that, this project can prevent book damages through effective management in which will alleviate the financial burden on the school, allowing resources to be directed toward other essential needs.

As we move forward with the Al-Ikhlas School Book Management System Project, we are confident that our collective efforts will not only improve the physical conditions of the school's reading corner but also contribute to the emotional and psychological well-being of the students. This project is a testament to the power of community engagement and collaboration in creating positive and lasting change. We invite stakeholders, sponsors, and supporters to join us in this meaningful endeavor, as together, we cultivate an environment where the love for learning can flourish among these deserving children.
