The Orang Asli are Malaysia's original inhabitants, forming an integral part of the nation’s cultural and historical identity. Although a minority, it is our collective responsibility to support their welfare and provide necessary assistance. The primary goal of our programmes is to improve their living conditions while introducing aspects of Islam to encourage its adoption as a comprehensive way of life. To achieve this goal, COMRADE IIUM has implemented a variety of programmes, such as teaching them basic Islamic information and giving them access to mosques where they can learn more about Islam and its values. Community Outreach for Orang Asli Development (COMRADE) is a club that is responsible for engaging IIUM students with Orang Asli in social projects in order to promote development in terms of infrastructure, mentality and spiritual enhancement for Orang Asli. It is meant to continue helping and maintaining the effort of delivering da’wah to the aborigine community as the main target. In order to better serve the ummah, particularly our main target group, the aboriginal community, COMRADE has organized many programs aimed primarily at the development of the aboriginal community, with the main goals of providing theoretical and practical education to villagers and assisting in the development of the aboriginal community. The primary goal of this program is to provide the Orang Asli with exposure to religion while engaging them in an entertaining way. Last Ramadhan, COMRADE successfully conducted Enhance 1.0 in KOA Susu, which focused on improving the living conditions of the Orang Asli while introducing aspects of Islam to encourage its adoption as a way of life. As the KOA Susu improve, we learn that they can improvise without the assistance of COMRADE, yet the relationship between COMRADE and the Aborigines is like family. So, building on this foundation, COC 1.0 will serve as a continuation of these efforts to continue the connection as a chain that never ends. Organized as one of the last programs under the tenure of COMRADE for the 2024/2025 session, this initiative will further strengthen engagement with the Orang Asli community while fostering mutual learning and understanding. This COC 1.0 will be held at KOA Susu located in Pos Telanok, Cameron Highlands, Pahang, bringing IIUM students and the Orang Asli together for meaningful interactions and shared growth.

Kampung Susu is located at Pos Telanok, Cameron Highlands, Pahang. The village has approximately 45 houses, each constructed in neat rows according to a predetermined plan. In addition, the village has a community centre, surau, takraw court, and a local school known as Sekolah Kebangsaan Pos Telanok. Majority of Orang Asli are from the ethnic Semai. Bahasa Asli Semai is their main language but they can also speak in Bahasa Melayu when interacting with outsiders. Chain Of Change (COC) 1.0, will be held as one of the last programs organized under the tenure of COMRADE IIUM for the session 2024/2025. It is a continuation of Enhance 1.0, which was successfully conducted last Ramadhan. The previous program aimed to serve the Orang Asli community by addressing their basic needs, such as food, groceries, and clothing, and offering enriching skill classes and educational activities. This year, COC 1.0 builds upon the foundation set by its predecessor, aiming to strengthen ties and engagement with the community. The program focuses on a holistic approach to community development by integrating environmental sustainability, education, and cultural empowerment. Through the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) initiative, awareness about environmental sustainability is promoted among the community. This initiative will improve the quality of life for the villagers by promoting better waste management and environmental care. It encourages them to actively participate in reducing, reusing, and recycling materials in their daily lives. As a result, the village environment becomes cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable for future generations. In addition to practical education, the program emphasizes Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), particularly in agricultural practices such as planting and crop management. Through this, villagers gain valuable skills in sustainable farming techniques and modern planting methods. These skills not only improve food security but also create income-generating opportunities within the community. Stories from the Prophet’s era that highlight hygiene are shared informally during module slots and community gatherings, such as Rewang, ensuring that the value of cleanliness is deeply embedded in daily life as an essential aspect of Islamic living.

Cultural empowerment is also a key component of the program, with a special session dedicated to the women of the Orang Asli community. This session, conducted during the Helwani slot, focuses on preserving traditional knowledge, strengthening identity, and encouraging women to take active roles in community development. It also provides a safe space for them to share experiences, build confidence, and learn new skills. Through these interconnected efforts, the program aspires to create a lasting impact on the community by fostering sustainability, education, and empowerment, ultimately enhancing the overall well-being and resilience of its members.
