The new semester has welcomed returning students into the campus as now all students that fulfilled the specified requirements are allowed to stay in the campus. This indicates that there will be female students on campus that will carry out their activities outside of the Mahallah as they perform their daily routines, either during the day or night. Hence, it is imperative that the female students of IIUM be well-equipped with self-defence tools as an added value that could better prepare them in facing unprecedented and unwanted situations. The lack of self defence equipment possessed by the female students is the gap that this project is trying to address.

PROJECT TITLE 

The project title “PRETTY TOUGH” is a word play that exhibits two words that can be considered oxymoronic in nature as it highlights pretty which is often associated with feminine traits of women and tough in our community is a paraded symbol of masculinity. However, through this project we are trying to instill the awareness that women are able to possess both traits in their acts of self defense, as the act of self defense is not an exclusive term that should only be applicable for men nor should it contain a gendered expression.

11/04/2022 - 11/05/2022: Crowdfunding period

10/05/2022 - 15/05/2022: Registration period

21/05/2022: Distribution of self-defense kits to selected applicants
